Using Colour Wheel in Interior Decoration

What is a color wheel? If you love colors and you want to decorate your room, or the whole house you need to know about this color basic wheel. I will give you some examples for using this color guidance in decorating, from different sources.

The color wheel is a color circle, based on red, yellow and blue, is traditional in the field of art. Sir Isaac Newton developed the first circular diagram of colors in 1666. Since then, scientists and artists have studied and designed numerous variations of this concept.

Differences of opinion about the validity of one format over another continue to provoke debate. In reality, any color circle or color wheel which presents a logically arranged sequence of pure hues has merit.

There are also definitions (or categories) of colors based on the color wheel.
colour wheel

Monochromatic: a one colour scheme can incorporate several values of the colour to keep it from looking monotonous. Various textures help ehance the single colour scheme.

Related/Analogous: This scheme uses three to five colours and includes one of three primary colours (red. yellow and blue). the related/analogous colours are the colour segments showing on either side of the primary colour. Varying the value and intensity of the colours is beneficial.

Complementary: these schemes use colours that are opposite each other on the wheel, such as red and green or blue and orange. The result is usually vibrant and lively. It works best if one colour dominates and the other severs as a contrast.

Triadic: Red, yellow and blue
this shceme uses three colours that are equidistant on the colour wheel, such as red, yellow. blue. One colour can be used as the dominant colour and the other two as accents.

Split complementary: This scheme is one that uses any colour from the wheel in combination with the two colours that are directly opposite the one chosen. For example, you could use violet, yellow green and yellow orange.

and the last one is achromatic. There are colours in the white through to black range. Achromatic schemes are restrained and sophisticated.

Hope this help to give you an idea how to decorate your room using the colour wheel. It's fun! Next week I'll talk more about the psychology of colour.

What is a moodboard?

My next assignments, I need to make a moodboard to create a living room. I wondered, what is a moodboard? I haven't heard of it at all. So, I made a lot of research from different sites and made a conclusion like below:

Moodboards , sometimes called inspiration boards, are used in a variety of disciplines. You've not doubt seen them used for interior design, where fabric swatches and paint chip samples are grouped together on a poster to show a homeowner what type of atmosphere the new decor will create. They are also used frequently in fashion to highlight trends and styles.
In essence, they are a compilation of inspirational elements used by designers to flesh out ideas at the beginning of a design project.

A moodboard is extremely useful for establishing the aesthetic feel of a design idea. Things that can be explored in the moodboard  include photography style, color palettes, typography, patterns, fabrics, etc.

I use a Moodboard app from A Tiny Tribe llc, to create my moodboard on my new ipad, it's a cool app. It's worth to try!

How to create a moodboard?
Gather together all your decorating ideas, any inspiring images, fabric swatches, wallpaper samples, color samples, etc and create a storyboard on an A3-size piece of plain card or in a large, plain notebook.

Choose your base color
Whether it's a flooring or a wall color, this represents the largest area of color in your room, so it's important to add a large sample of it to your moodboard. Adding carpet samples helps you think about texture too.

Add an accent
This is an important decision. Do you go for a dramatic contrast? or an accent just a few tones away from your base color? Use your moodboard to play around with options and layer up the board with swatches and scraps.

Create mood with accessories
These will really set the tone for your decorating scheme - go for accessories which share a vibrant accent color, and stick to a single theme, maybe purple, vintage, or country or eastern. Don't get carried away and mix up different styles, or your scheme will end up looking messy rather than eclectic.

Here are some samples of moodboards:

The Sexy Bachelor Pad in Melbourne

For this assignment, I've got to change a blue living room like below:

Client:
Sex: Male, Single
Age: 28 yo
Hobby: Fanatical downhill skier
Place: a penthouse in Melbourne

Project:
To redecorate his living room and change all the furniture.

First, to start the the job, I took all the furniture out the room and threw them away. Blue furniture is out of date. Then repainted the whole room.
The wall side of 4000mm, I painted the wall with broken white and put a custom built book shelves. Painted the book shelves mahogany to give a contrast look.

Then the other wall, I painted it with black. Built the circle thing in the middle of the wall as an accent and hung wallpaper then put a television with built-in speakers. I wanted to create a point of dominance for this room. Then I installed the gas fireplace next to the television and a pair of vintage ski, as he is a fanatical skier.

Bought a Hermes chaise lounge and a black arc lamp together put them in the corner of the room. So the client can have a relax reading time with a cuppa of tea.

The other corner side, I built a simple bar with a sink and wine cooler underneath the sink. I wanted the client has good social life with his mates. By having the corner simple bar, that would be perfect.

L Shape sofa is perfect for socializing  with mates. Got the same  ottoman design as a coffee table.

For the ceiling, I changed the current cornice with as in the picture. Lines and circle elements are the theme of the room, together with the rug design. The whole room looks elegance, sexy yet still comfortable.

Here is my 3D design of the living room, using Google SketchUp free edition, I love this software, really helpful to create 3D design!

Please feel free to give me some advice to add up to the room!
